Therapist Spotlight: Psychologist to Online-Based Therapy with Dr. Shamecca Scott

This Therapist Spotlight is a part of our interview series with experienced Mental Health Practitioners, where therapists share their experiences in Private Practice Therapy.
What was one of the biggest problems you struggled with and ultimately solved in the beginning of your private practice? What solution did you find to your (perhaps persisting) problem?
The biggest problem I initially struggled with was getting clients. However, after networking with other professionals, not just psychologist, utilizing social media, and aligning myself with professional organizations, my company began to grow.
What advice would you give to a budding mental health practitioner just getting licensed?
I would advise newly licensed psychologists to be patient and distinguish themselves from their peers. Working in the field of mental health requires a lot of delayed gratification( e.g., building clientele, waiting on reimbursement from insurance companies, etc.). Lastly, as more individuals pursue careers in mental health it’s important to distinguish yourself by having a subspecialty such as forensic, health psychology, etc.
What advice would you have given yourself early in your career?
As a young psychologist just starting out, I would have advised myself to explore every opportunity and be patient because this a journey.
Please let us know about you: where are you located, any specialties, credentials, and educational background. How should someone get in touch with you?

My name is Dr. Shamecca M. Scott. I have a doctorate of psychology degree with a concentration in clinical psychology. I also have a postgraduate Master of Science degree in clinical psychopharmacology and postgraduate training in executive and business coaching.

In 2011, after completing a 9 month tour in Iraq, where I was an Army psychologist, I decided to establish my company, MindSet.
MindSet is unique in that it is an online based business that provides two-fold services, mental health psycho-education, psychological consultation, and personal and executive coaching. Because MindSet is an online based business it allows for flexibility in service delivery. The majority of services are provided via video-teleconferencing or telephonically.
