Mental Health Billing Q&A #3: How to Prevent Data Errors
We often have new providers giving us incorrect information, wondering why claims aren’t being paid. It’s critical to get front and back photocopies of the insurance card(s) from your new patients upon their first visit, as well as having them fill out an intake form (you can find ours here).
This simple step will make sure you have their correct information to file, which can be a huge burden in getting claims paid.
Do not trust their hand writing or recitation of their subscriber ID as they are long and are easy to mess up. Also, if they have a Blue Cross Blue Shield (or just Blue Cross or just Blue Shield) card, make sure to request the three letter prefix in the subscriber ID, unless they have a federal plan, which will begin with “R”.
Incorporate these simple tips into your practice to eliminate errors and reduce your billing headache!
